Breast Surgery Department

乳腺外科のイメージ

The Breast Surgery Department provides diagnosis and treatment for various breast-related symptoms, such as lumps, pain, or discharge. At our hospital, we use the latest ultrasound device called ABUS, which allows for much more detailed imaging compared to conventional ultrasound.Based on these results, our specialists provide clear explanations, and for first-time patients, we also offer guidance on how to perform breast self-examinations.Please feel free to consult us if you experience any of the following symptoms.

  • Feeling a lump in the breast
  • Dimpling or tethering of the breast when raising the arms
  • Discharge from the nipple (brick-colored)
  • Erosion or ulceration of the nipple
  • The entire breast is red, swollen, or has a non-healing ulcer
  • Feeling a lump in the armpit (hardened lymph node)

Examinations

Visual and Manual (Palpation) Examination

The doctor visually inspects the breasts for dimpling or other abnormalities and palpates (feels) them to check for lumps.Lumps detectable by palpation are usually of a certain size. While not all lumps are breast cancer, further detailed examinations will be performed if necessary.

Breast Cancer Screening at Our Clinic

Breast cancer is a disease that affects many women, yet the screening participation rate in Japan remains low.
In Western countries, over 70% of women undergo breast cancer screening, but in Japan, the rate is only 20–30%, the lowest among the 30 OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) member countries.
Thanks to initiatives such as the Pink Ribbon campaign and government efforts, the screening rate is gradually increasing.
However, for women over 40, it is still only about 24%, indicating that breast cancer screening is not yet widespread.

Reasons for hesitating to undergo screening include general concerns similar to those for other health checkups, such as it being troublesome or time-consuming.
Additionally, many women worry that “breast cancer screening is embarrassing” or “mammography is painful.”

However, breast cancer is a disease that can be cured in more than 95% of cases if detected early.
Compared to other cancers, it is highly treatable.
Women over 40 should undergo breast cancer screening at least once every two years.

Furthermore, due to the increasing incidence of breast cancer during pregnancy, the Japanese Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology now recommends breast cancer screening even during pregnancy for early detection.

At our clinic, to improve early detection rates, we offer a painless breast cancer examination using the latest ultrasound device, Invenia ABUS, which is still uncommon in Japan.
